Students Tyler Newman and Ben Muldrow won “Best of Summit” as well as first place in the college category for their app called Pickup, a social app that allows users to create and join local pickup games for different sports. The developers hope to release the app on Apple’s App Store within the next month and the Android version within the next two months.

The competition is open to middle school, high school, and full-time college students. The Charleston Defense Contractors Association challenges students to create a mobile app that solves a problem, is easy to use, and offers an enjoyable user experience.

A recent economic report from Darla Moore School of Business at University of South Carolina (USC) revealed that Charleston is one of the leading defense and technology hubs in the U.S., contributing $10.6 billion to the overall $24.1 billion annual economic impact for South Carolina.

We all know Charleston, South Carolina for its beautiful beaches, tourism, foodie scene, leisurely pace and southern hospitality. While more and more families, businesses and top talent flock to Charleston, most don’t realize the extent to which the technology, government and defense communities are growing within Charleston and its surrounding areas.

The Palmetto State’s military community collectively creates an annual economic impact of $24.1 billion, according to a new study released by the S.C. Military Base Task Force.

The Charleston area has the largest military presence in the state — 3,810 service members, 71,011 veterans and 4,612 Department of Defense civilians, according to a study released Wednesday.

“Most don’t realize the extent to which the technology, government and defense communities are growing within Charleston and its surrounding areas. These leading industries, particularly those related to defense, are the core to the growing attractiveness of Charleston beyond just weekend tourists,” wrote Josh Hatter, President, CDCA.
